Escapism: A Virtual Fan Art Exhibition by The Interlude
Adeena Hasan
Description of the fan art: It features the 6 members of the German Industrial Metal Band Rammstein before they were world-famous musicians. It depicts them as 6 spirited young men trying to thrive behind the Iron Curtain in their native East Germany. It also features the Stasi lurking in the background: the notorious East German secret police who were always cracking down on rebellious artists. Till Lindemann (Rammstein’s future frontman) is shown with his 4-year-old daughter, who was born in 1985, making the year 1989 the backdrop of this drawing. So the fan art depicts the members merely months before the Berlin Wall topples. (This event was vital for the band’s formation in 1994.) The German Reunification approaching is depicted by the transition to cool and bright colours to the left while the dark days are seen being left behind (along with the Stasi) through the darker and murkier shades on the right.
Moreover, Flake Lorenz and Paul Landers (top row, 2nd and 3rd from the left) are shown laughing together signifying that they were in the same underground punk band before Rammstein. Christoph Schneider (1st from left, top row) wears a jacket with “Army” written on it as an ode to his military service in East Germany. Richard Kruspe (centre, bottom row) is shown contemplating about escaping the Iron Curtain for more artistic freedom, also based on true events.
