EU proposes new laws to make phones last longer

The European Commission is considering the prospect of requiring manufacturers of smartphones and tablets to make their products more resilient and simpler to replace in a new draft proposal. The commission claims that if this proposal is approved, it will lessen the amount of electronic waste produced, as well as increase recycling rates and the reuse of resources used to make electronic gadgets, which will reduce carbon waste.

According to the EU’s guidelines, manufacturers will be required to pass a series of battery durability tests if they can’t supply batteries to consumers for five years. These will guarantee that even after 1,000 complete charge cycles, devices operate at at least 80% of their rated capacity. Additionally, manufacturers will have to guarantee that software updates never reduce battery life.

Mars Rover Oxygen Experiment

The Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) is a tiny golden box that was carried to Mars by NASA’s robotic Perseverance rover last year.

Since that time, MOXIE has been able to produce oxygen from the sparse Martian air. The scientists behind this device also revealed MOXIE has been performing so effectively that its oxygen output is comparable to the rate of a moderate Earth tree’s output.

This is a historic achievement, and puts us even further towards eventually conquering the Red Planet someday.
