A Workshop titled “Art of Speech” held in Metropolitan University
A workshop titled “Art of Speech” was arranged on Sunday, 27 November 2022, in the Professor M Habibur Rahman Library Hall by MU Speakers’ Club of English, one of the clubs of the Department of English, Metropolitan University, Sylhet. The resource person for the workshop was Gazi Saiful Hasan, Head, Department of Law and Justice, and a renowned anchor as well as a news reader in Bangladesh Betar.
The workshop focused on enhancing one’s presentation and communication skills, which would help one to be a remarkable host and anchor. Registration for the workshop began on 12 November 2022 and continued until 22 November 2022. The workshop was held in two sessions; the first session was conducted from 12 PM to 1:30 PM, and the second session took place from 2:30 PM to 4 PM. Overall, 130 enthusiastic students from all the departments attended the workshop.
Anik Biswas, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of English, splendidly delivered the welcoming speech of the event, where he provided his insights on speaking and communication skills using his personal experiences and expressed his sincere appreciation to the resource person, MU Speakers’ Club of English, and all the guests and participants who were present in the workshop.
During the event, the resource person Gazi Saiful Hasan familiarised the participants with the importance of various forms of speech and shared ways to practice the art of speech in his presentation using illustrations and videos. He also provided the students with printed resources to help the students comprehend the subject matter clearly, and he activated them to identify the correct pronunciations and spellings of various commonly mispronounced and misspelt words.
Arpa Paul, a student of the Department of English, aided the resource person by singing and playing the harmonium to demonstrate voice and speech training. Moreover, he gave tips on how to present on stage, radio, television, or other media and also on how to recite poetry eloquently. Students present in the workshop participated by answering and asking various questions to the resource person.
Professor Dr. Suresh Ranjan Basak, Treasurer of Metropolitan University, Sylhet, and Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences shared a few wise words with the participants and appreciation for the resource person at the end of the program. He also handed over an honorary crest to the resource person Gazi Saiful Hasan. Deputy Registrar Mihir Kanti Choudhury was also present throughout the event.
The event came to its conclusion with the closing speech delivered by the President of MU Speakers’ Club of English, Sanjida Chowdhury, Assistant Professor, Department of English, acknowledging and cherishing the club members who arranged the event and expressed her gratitude to the resource person Gazi Saiful Hasan for his all-around support and hard work to facilitate the students with new knowledge. “This is just the beginning. There are many more to come and much more to learn,” remarked Sanjida Chowdhury.
The entire event was hosted by the Vice President of the club, Ruhama Chowdhury, and Organising Secretary SAM Thahmid. Treasurer Farhana Khanom Joly, Lecturer, Department of English, was present during the event and provided guidance to the students.
Moreover, under the supervision of the Senior Vice President Trisha Choudhury, the team of MU Speakers’ Club of English, including General Secretary Tajnin Hussain Chowdhury, Joint Secretaries Samapti Sarker and Shumaiya Begum Tasnia, Assistant Treasurer Shahed Ahmed, Office Secretary Sumaiya Chowdhury, Publication Secretary Arpa Paul, Executive Members Eshmam Hussain Eram, Sumaiya Begum, Md. Samiul Haque Peash and Abdullah-al-Sakif, and the Volunteer Coordinator Srayonthi Sarker Thia as well as all the volunteers who were present during the event, worked together harmoniously to bring the event to fruition.
The participants who were present during the workshop received a certificate of participation at the end of the event. MU Speakers’ Club of English also awarded the previous committee members with certificates of appreciation.
